Bishop's Stortford Town Council has formally adopted its Old Cemetery Greenspace Action Plan 2026–2031 (GAP) following a meeting with the Friends of Bishop's Stortford Cemetery on Friday.
The Plan sets out a clear framework for the future management of the Old Cemetery, balancing the enhancement of biodiversity with the Council's continuing responsibility to maintain the cemetery as a dignified and respectful place of remembrance.
The Old Cemetery is one of the town's most historically significant green spaces, providing a peaceful setting for visitors while also supporting a wide variety of wildlife. The Greenspace Action Plan establishes practical management principles, including grass-cutting schedules, habitat management and maintenance arrangements, giving residents greater clarity about how different areas of the cemetery will be cared for over the coming years.
The Council has worked closely with Countryside Management Service and the Friends of Bishop's Stortford Cemetery in developing the Plan and wishes to thank both organisations for the time, expertise and constructive feedback they have provided throughout the process.
Councillor Miriam Swainston, Council Leader, said:
"The Old Cemetery is both a place of remembrance and an important green space. This Plan recognises that these two roles go hand in hand. It provides clear guidance on how the cemetery will be managed in a way that supports nature while always respecting those who are buried here, including the servicemen and women commemorated in the cemetery's war graves. At a time when we are all thinking more carefully about biodiversity and the effects of climate change, it is important that we manage our green spaces responsibly and sustainably, while never losing sight of the cemetery's primary purpose as a place of remembrance and reflection."
The Council will review the Action Plan periodically over the next five years, working with partners and volunteers to monitor progress and identify opportunities to further enhance the cemetery's historic landscape and biodiversity.
