The Mayor
Councillor Martin Adams has been elected Mayor of Bishop's Stortford for the Civic Year 2026-2027.
The Deputy Mayor is Councillor Richard Bower for the Civic Year 2026-2027.
The Mayor is elected each year at the Statutory Annual Meeting of the Council, which is held in May.
The position of Mayor is ceremonial, and the holder of the position is also Chairman of the Council.
The Mayor organises many events throughout the year in aid of his or her charity and attends many other events organised by a variety of organisations.

A Message from The Mayor
I believe there is no better place to live than Bishop’s Stortford, plain and simple. I am both proud of the town, and loyal to its residents.
With its proximity to London, Stansted, and Cambridge, Bishop’s Stortford is a brilliant location for people who wish to work and strive for better things. I am so heartened that this town is constantly working to create the best version of itself given the tremendous change that is affecting everyone and everything we need in this life. Our own businesses in town make a well-balanced environment for us all; shops, eateries, service industries, manufacturing and production, technology, arts, and our sports associations, charity and community groups, football teams and ‘academies’ such as BSCFC, Swifts, etc. are second to none. I am aware that not everything in town is perfect, but we are truly blessed by so many good things that affect our lives, and a well-funded Town Council to enable many of our dreams.
As Mayor of Bishop’s Stortford I see very few areas I would shy away from in terms of trying to make the town a better place to live, and will celebrate successes and hard work wherever and whatever they are.
